Bar Standards Board

Are you keen to make a contribution to the regulation of barristers?

The Bar Standards Board, the independent regulatory body for barristers in England and Wales, is seeking a new barrister member.

The Bar Standards Board (BSB) sets the entry requirements for the profession and draws up rules and guidance as to how barristers practise. The Board seeks to maintain high standards in the profession through its supervision and assurance work, and through enforcement or disciplinary action where necessary. The BSB plays an important role in the administration of justice and the upholding of the rule of law in England and Wales. We are governed by a Board made up of seven barristers and eight lay members of whom one is our lay Chair.

We seek to appoint up to two barrister Board members who will work with others on the Board to lead the organisation through a time of far reaching change in the legal services market and its regulation. Over the next ten years, barristers in England and Wales will continue to face major challenges. These include changing consumer demands and expectations, significant reductions in public funding for Legal Aid and the justice system, technological advances and global competition. The BSB must ensure that its regulation is risk-based, proportionate and agile in a changing legal services and regulatory landscape. The Board must be ready to adapt and to participate in shaping change. So this is an exciting time to join the BSB.

The Board seeks members with a wide variety of backgrounds but we would particularly welcome applications from barristers practising at the Criminal Bar, the Family Bar, the Young Bar and from those practising outside London or the south-east, who would complement the skills and experience of our current Board members.

You will have an awareness of the issues facing the justice system and the legal services market. You should be able to provide high-level strategic thinking, advice and leadership on the development and implementation of policy relating to the work of the BSB. You will also appreciate what is required to be an effective non-executive Board member as you work with the Chair, other Board members, and the executive team to achieve the BSB’s objectives.

The appointment is remunerated, at a rate of £9,240 annually, for a time commitment between two and three days per month.

For further information, please see the candidate information pack on our website.

For a confidential discussion with the BSB’s Director General about the role, please contact her Executive Assistant, Jeanette Fordyce-Harvey on 020 7611 1422.

Currently, all candidates must be authorised to practise by the Bar Standards Board.

Closing date: 9am on Monday 22 October 2018.

Interviews will be held in central London on the morning of Monday 19 November.

Candidates with a disability who require reasonable adjustments should contact Rebecca Forbes on 020 70926 806. The Bar Standards Board is Disability Confident. Candidates with a disability who meet the essential criteria for this role will be guaranteed an interview under this scheme.

The BSB is an equal opportunities employer and welcomes applications from all suitably qualified individuals.
