A return exchange of solicitors/barristers will take place in the autumn. Any interested young barristers should contact Jessica Henderson (
JHenderson@BarCouncil.org.uk). Knowledge of Russian will not be required as placements will be in Russian firms with substantial international business.
This is an exciting scheme which will strengthen professional links with one of the largest international legal markets for the Bar. The chambers in which the Russian lawyers were placed were diverse: three criminal sets, one criminal/common law set, one commercial/employment set, one commercial/chancery set and one commercial set. This opportunity was advertised to the Bar as a whole. In addition, further chambers have been involved in the seminars and the wider profession was invited to the well attended Closing Reception on 22 March.

Seven young Russian lawyers took part in the first exchange of this new scheme. The programme is run by the Bar Council, the Law Society and the Federal Chamber of Advocates and has the support of both countries’ Ministries of Justice. The Russian lawyers spent three weeks in law firms followed by three weeks in chambers, and were offered one evening seminar per week.
