“Litigant in person” u-turn
Litigants conducting legal proceedings on their own behalf should be referred to as “litigants in person” in all proceedings – no longer “self-represented litigants” as recommended by the Civil Justice Council in 2011.
In a Practice Direction announcing the U-turn, Lord Dyson MR said that both terms continued to be used which was “confusing both for individual litigants and the courts”.
Pro bono support
Nearly half the Bar (42.4%) regularly carries out legal pro bono work, a Bar Council survey has revealed. To support the work of the Bar Pro Bono Unit, every practising barrister is now being asked to make a £30 opt-out donation as part of the Practising Certificate Renewal process.
