Competition and Markets Authority

Competition and Markets Authority
The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is the UK’s principal competition and consumer regulator, with an overarching goal to safeguard and promote fair and open competition in the UK economy

The CMA’s work includes reviewing mergers and acquisitions; investigating potential Competition Act 1998 infringements; conducting market studies; undertaking consumer enforcement investigations and with the new DMCC Act, we will soon begin using our powers ensuring the promotion of competition and innovation within digital markets and the new consumer administrative enforcement regime.

The CMA’s Standing Counsel Panel operates as the CMA’s rst port of call for counsel advice (in both litigation and pre-litigation matters) and representation in Court. In 2023, the CMA had a particularly busy year in litigation, with the organisation spending 120 days in court, and there are no signs of the litigation slowing down in 2024 and beyond!

As a result, the standing counsel team is expanding and we are looking for specialist barristers to join our team. We offer an opportunity to grow your practice with an excellent exposure to a wide range of high-profile litigation which is at the cutting edge of competition and consumer law and key insights into how the regulator works.
