The Magistrates’ Association has voted against proposals to scrap the religious oath for witnesses and defendants.
The motion was put forward by Ian Abrahams, a Bristol magistrate, who told the Mail on Sunday before the conference: “I’m suggesting we take holy books out of the process. Instead, people will have to show they understand they could be sent to prison if they don’t tell the truth.”
The Association, which represents over 80% of serving magistrates and has over 28,000 members, debated the proposal at its October conference.
